For Yalda Taheri, feminist activist and artist, Madge Turner’s courage resonates deeply - a woman who dared to challenge injustice and claim freedom, even when the cost was high. Now part of the Madge Flag Project with @sanctuaryinchi, Yalda’s voice carries the experiences of women still fighting to be heard today.

More than a century after Madge Turner fought for women’s freedom here in Sussex, many women around the world are still denied their basic rights.

More than a century after Madge Turner fought for women’s freedom here in Sussex, many women around the world are still denied their basic rights. @sanctuaryinchi supports women who have fled persecution, conflict and gender-based violence - women rebuilding their lives and finding their voices, often for the first time. That’s why Sanctuary’s role in the Madge Flag Project is so powerful. Stitching ‘Dare To Be Free’ holds profound meaning for those who risked everything for that hope.

As we approach the end of the year, we took the opportunity to come together at @noviummuseum to share progress on the Madge Turner Flag project with all four partner charities and some of the women whose stories are stitched into it. Each piece of work will be woven together by quilter Suzanne Boulter and revealed at the ChichestHER exhibition next October. In the meantime, our fundraising continues for a statue of Madge Turner — sculpted by Kate Viner, with Madge holding the finished flag. Thank you to our partners and supporters @chichestercitycouncil, @noviummuseum, @chichesterwomenshistorygroup, @sanctuaryinchi, @stonepillowcharity, @mysistershouseuk, @lifecentre_uk, @katevinerart and @chicathedral.

Earlier this week, @mysistershouseuk marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women - a reminder of the strength, courage and resilience carried by so many of the women they support.

Earlier this week, @mysistershouseuk marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women - a reminder of the strength, courage and resilience carried by so many of the women they support. Having My Sisters’ House involved in the Madge Turner Flag Project feels especially powerful. The creative workshops with @katevinerart gave women a safe, supportive space to reflect, rebuild confidence and explore their stories on their own terms. Together, they honour Madge Turner’s legacy and shine a light on the vital role of Women’s Centres like @mysistershouseuk - places that offer safety, solidarity and belonging for women across our communities.

Over the past few weeks, women connected to and supported by four local charities, have sewn their personal stories of what it means to be a woman into every letter of the Madge Turner Flag - one side reading DARE TO BE FREE, the other WOMEN’S FREEDOM LEAGUE. Each stitch carries courage, creativity and lived experience. Together, their work becomes a celebration of the rights and freedoms hard won by women like Madge Turner 100 years ago - and a reminder that, by standing together, we ensure those freedoms continue today.
