Madge Turner has been on a rolling exhibition for all of 2025, We started at the New Park Centre of Arts and then went to the University of Chichester and Chichester College and schools.
Comments from year 8 re our Exhibition at Bishop Luffa School.
We've really enjoyed being able to look at the exhibition during and on the way to our History lessons at school. It has given us another perspective on History. None of us knew about Madge Turner before the exhibition and it's a local reminder of all the amazing women from History who have been overlooked, just like the other more famous women that we learnt about at the start of the year. We also enjoyed looking at all of the different types of sources that showed us what real historians get up to when they do their research.
The exhibition has taught us that women in Chichester in the past have stood up for themselves and for their rights, and that by putting themselves through lots of very hard work they eventually got what they wanted. It is had reminded us that we should always speak out for ourselves and not be afraid to persevere even when it might not seem like we are achieving what we hope to achieve.
I really liked the statue of Madge Turner that was on display with the exhibition in school. There aren't very many statues in Chichester and to have one of a woman would be amazing to show off the determination of our very own forgotten heroine who didn't just stay at home as she was expected to by society at the time. It was fun looking at the old photos of Chichester too.
