Our Mission

Putting Women Back Into History.

Chichester Women's History Group exists to uncover, celebrate and share the stories of women whose contributions to our city and beyond have too often been overlooked. From suffragists and social reformers to artists, writers and everyday Chichester women whose lives shaped the community around them — we believe their stories deserve to be told, remembered and woven into the city's identity.

We do this with rigour, warmth and a genuine sense of community spirit — bringing people together around shared discovery, conversation and pride in the women of Chichester past and present.

What we do

  • Talks — a year-round programme of talks by historians, authors and specialists, exploring the lives of remarkable women and the wider history that shaped them.

  • Research — original archival work that uncovers overlooked stories and brings new material to light.

  • Publications — turning our research into accessible books, articles and resources.

  • Blue Plaques — marking the Chichester homes and workplaces of women whose contributions deserve permanent recognition.

  • Exhibitions — a travelling exhibition currently touring schools, colleges, libraries and community venues across the city.

  • Community projects — collaborative work with local charities and organisations, including the Madge Turner Flag Project.

  • The Madge Turner Statue Appeal — our campaign to put a Chichester suffragist back where she belongs, at the heart of her city.
