Nordic Women Artists and the Modern Breakthrough

About the Talk

Between 1880 and 1920, Nordic women painters broke through barriers to receive the highest international accolades — only for the twentieth century to forget them. Now, a wave of blockbuster retrospectives at Tate Modern, The Royal Academy, the Musée d'Orsay and the Guggenheim has brought them back into the spotlight.

In this richly illustrated talk, James Vaux explores the work of artists including Hilma af Klint, Helene Schjerfbeck and Anna Ancher, telling the story of how they found training, the sacrifices they made, and why art history erased them.

About the Speaker

James Vaux spent his career in international banking, latterly managing Rothschild's Nordic operations from Stockholm. Fascinated by the region's culture, he completed an MA in Scandinavian Studies at University College London and is now a seasoned speaker with over 100 lectures to his name. He is Chairman of the Oxford University Society West Sussex.
