Charlotte Turner Smith (1749-1806): a Sussex poet and novelist

  • Assembly Rooms (The Council House) 80 North Street Chichester, PO19 1LQ UK (map)

About the Talk

Charlotte Smith was a writer whose poetry influenced the Romantic poets and whose novels reflected her own experience of discrimination as well as her radical ideas. The talk will include the story of Charlotte’s extraordinary life: her childhood at Bignor Park, her early and unhappy marriage, her twelve children and the need to ‘write to live’. It will explore how and why her reputation spread, declined and then was revived at the turn of this century.
